The Shutter (2004)

I’ll never agree with people who say that horror films are second-rate movie genre. Maybe, there are a lot of low quality horror films which makes people angry while the plot has too many moments that are just stupid and don’t make sense, but even that way built film might be a real cup of coffee for some viewers. I think that horror movie has its own specific idea and one has to find that unique way to watch it. On the other hand, I have to recognize that I prefer the horror movies that are just smooth and well fixed. One of that kind of movies is The Shutter.
One thing you can be sure about is that Asian horror films are really scary. This film from Thailand is not an exception. Make sure you have some guts to see this alone! The film is made in the tradition of the famous The Ring (Ringu), but it isn’t just a copy of that film, far away from that.
It would be a mistake to say that the script is the strongest spot on this film ‘cause it’s pretty standard for horror movie, at least nothing extraordinary. A young couple makes a car accident and hits the girl on the road, but the victim disappears. After that they discover that the victim persecutes the guy, firstly by appearing in his photos. The effect of the ghost in the photos works really fine and set up beautifully and scary. At the end it appears why that victim girl was showing up in the photos and persecuted him. Even if the plot is not the most original it is more than solid and the scene of the end makes no disappointment . The best thing of this film is that there are a lot of great fixed creepy moments, beautiful effects and solid acting. The atmosphere never causes boredom and you always feel the tension. The horror that makes this film isn’t the same as in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or other movie where’s a lot of blood and torture, it’s about some psychological fair of something that is mysterious. On the other hand, the action is pretty dynamic and you won’t get tired of slow and awkward scenes. A great camera work with seconding every move of the characters and the masterful material of sounds makes this movie brilliant and one of the most dreadful I’ve ever seen.
It was easy to expect that this film will be remade. Americans proved that. So I’m looking forward to see how Americans will deal with this one. I really suggest the original first!

  1. It's an effective scary story that depicts women with spirit - on both sides of the divide.
